Highgrove Manor in Mexborough has welcomed creatures great and small through its doors as part of a Pet Therapy programme which is bringing residents hugs and happiness. Dolly was the first feline friend to settle in and the lucky cat has been spoilt rotten.
Manager Ann Wood Said: "Dolly has enhanced our residents' lives by giving them ownership of their unit and made it their home. It's so nice to see so many relaxed, smiling faces. Some residents want to be with Dolly all through the day, chatting and stroking her."
Dolly was soon followed by Bengee, who has made the home's dementia unit his new territory. The energetic pup spent time visiting his previous owner in a care home and has adapted quickly to life at Highgrove. He was recently joined by border collie Bailey.
"Many of the residents gain enormous pleasure from interaction with the pets and the sensory benefits in being able to touch, stroke and groom the pets cannot be measured. Improved communication has been a big winner in the home. Residents are no longer prepared to watch the world go by – they now discuss things that interest them. Who knows what may come to stay next. some residents have suggested goats as Bailey likes to round things up."
